Year 3 – 6

Our Prep curriculum and opportunities beyond the classroom, whether it’s sport, music, extracurricular activities or clubs, encourage our pupils to give a great deal to school life and therefore gain a great deal from it.

As an independent school we don’t follow the national curriculum. Instead, we lead an enriched curriculum designed to inspire pupils to embrace challenge at every opportunity.

How is our Prep curriculum different?

We aim to provide our Prep School pupils with a well-rounded education. Therefore, our curriculum goes above and beyond the national framework. Here is how our curriculum is different:

  • Our highly skilled and inspirational teachers nurture the development of inquisitive learners.
  • Children are also challenged to take risks with their learning whilst quality feedback enables them to become reflective learners.
  • We have expert teachers delivering high quality learning in Science, Computing, Music, French, PE, Sport, Art and Design and Technology.
  • Our School has incredible specialist facilities that set the stage for our pupils to excel.
  • We develop children to take ownership of their learning. They are taught how to become effective communicators in written, spoken and digital forms.
  • Our programme of homework tasks and activities further enhance study skills and enrich every child’s learning independently of the teacher.
  • We work closely with the Senior School, sharing specialist teachers and facilities. Children in Year 5 and 6 spend an increased amount of time there so pupils are familiar with the layout and teachers, making the transition smooth.
  • We place great value on nurturing creativity, collaboration, problem solving skills and deep thinking. Additionally, we develop talent and ability in abundance.

The benefits of an independent curriculum

Children at Yarm Preparatory School have a platform from which they can thrive. For example, our mathematicians are highly successful in the UK Junior Mathematics Challenge, whilst our best musicians regularly perform in regional and national ensembles. Equally, our sports teams compete in national tournaments against many of the top schools in the North East of England.

Above all, children in Year 3-6 thrive in our happy and purposeful atmosphere where there is always a ‘buzz’ of activity and learning is a pleasure.

Academic success, challenge, leadership opportunities, team work, respect and pride in our School are fundamental cornerstones of life at Yarm Prep School and beyond.
